ダンスミュージックのシーンでは既に知名度の高いベテランThomas Goldは、彼の今までに見せなかった他の面を音楽を通してさらけ出し、新しい音楽方向に進むことを決め、スローダウンするどころか増々ビッグになっています。
彼のArmada Musicから出たニュー・アルバム『Revelation: Part 1』は、今までより遅いビートを使い、更にポップな感じでヴォーカルを増やした彼の新しいスタイルのアルバムです。このアルバムで、DJは素敵なプロダクションスキルが備わった才能溢れるミュージシャンでもあるということが証明できたと言っても過言ではないでしょう。新しい音楽方向に踏み切るといった、リスクを伴う行動を起こしたものの、このベルリン・ベースのアーティストは更に成功を収めています。
アルバム『Revelation: Part 1』は4月1日にリリースされ、この中のシングル「Magic」はなんと、すでにSpotifyで20万回再生されています。また、他のこのアルバムに収録されている曲「Survive」は、ヴォーカリストIda Hallquistをフィーチャリングとして迎え、アップビートで夏な感じのアンセムで、リスナーの心をしかっかり掴みうっとりさせる曲に仕上がっています。
このアルバムのパート2は、今年の終わり頃に発売が期待されています。
Miami Music Weekから彼の全米ツアーが始まった中、Thomas Goldに直接彼の新しい音楽方向について、彼の音楽への愛、日本のファンへのメッセージなどをインタビューで聞くことができました！

＿＿あなたのニュー・アルバム『Revelation: Part 1』がArmadaからリリースされましたが、Armadaと言えば、成功のカギは情熱と謳っているレーベルですよね。このアルバムはあなたの情熱が詰まったプロジェクトに見えますが、どんな情熱がダンスミュージックとこのアルバムを作るように影響したのですか？
Thomas Gold：ただ単に僕は音楽を愛しているんだ。7歳からキーボードを演奏し始めて、昔から音楽が大好きで、音楽を作りながら育ってきたんだ。とにかく音楽を作りたいっていうのが昔も今も変わらない僕のパッションなんだ。朝起きる時、すごくハッピーな気分なんだ。何故かって言うと、起きてスタジオまで歩いて行って何か新しい音楽を作れるから。スタジオでは一人で何時間もエンジョイできるんだ。だから自分の趣味と情熱を仕事にできるっていうことにとても感謝してるんだ。
このアルバム『Revelation』からは、僕の全ての音楽への愛を感じることができるはずだよ。クラブミュージックから離れて、もっと曲それぞれに物語性がある歌がベースとなっているアルバムなんだ。数々のヴォーカリストと仕事をすることができて、ソングライターや歌手たちと長い時間をスタジオで一緒に過ごしたんだ。
僕は新しい方向（音楽に関して）に進みたいと思っていたんだ。アルバムを通して人々に自分に何ができるか、自分は何をしたいのかそして、自分自身そのままをさらけ出すことができるからアルバムを出すことがパーフェクトだと思ったんだ。クラブ用の曲、または大きなヒット曲だけを作ることが全てじゃないから、頭の中にしばらくしまってあったアイディアをアルバムに入れてみることにしたんだ。
それに、このアルバムではとても遅いテンポを使っているんだ。曲によっては、96bpmまたは95bpmまであるんだ。例えば、僕のシングル「Magic」では105bpmで、今までにこんなのは作ったことがなかったんだ。沢山の種類の楽器を使用することができ、“この曲はクラブで使えるか? 曲にきちんとしたドロップはあるか? このエナジーで良いか？”ってことを考えなくて良かったし、とてもワクワクしたよ。“こんな感じの曲かな？ 良いバイブを集められるかな？”という以前とは全く異なったアプローチをかけながらこのアルバムを作れて本当にハッピーだよ。
＿＿あなたは本当に音楽への情熱が熱いアーティストに見えます。そこで、今となってはダンスミュージックがビッグになり、数々のDJたちが名前を売ろうとしているこの状況を見て、今後のダンスミュージックの方向性などについてどう思われますか？
Thomas Gold：今の時点では、ダンスミュージックがどんな方向に進んでいくか分からないよね。って言うのは、僕が話したアーティストたちは皆何か新しいこと、また何か前とは違うことをしようとしているんだ。それってクールなことだと思うんだ。何故ならば、人々は何に関してもオープンだからね。例えば、僕の新しいアルバムへのフィードバックでは誰もネガティブなことを言わなかったんだ。僕の昔からのファンまでが、僕の今やっていることを愛してるって言ってくれているんだ。それって最高だよね。だって、新しいことや、前とは異なったことにトライする時って、ファンがそれを好きになってくれるか分からなくてリスクを伴うからね。
数々のDJたちやプロデューサーたちが新しいことに挑戦していて、彼らは皆自分たちのスタイルを貫いているよね。皆それぞれ違うビジョンを持っているし、今の時代では至るところから沢山の音楽の影響を受けるよね。例えば、自分自身もトラップやダブステップといった昔には聞いたことがなかったものまで聞くようになったんだ。これらの種類の音楽はプロデュースしてないけれど、こういうのに感化されてるんだ。あと、沢山のポップミュージックも聞いていて、これにも同じく感化されてるんだ。
Ultra Miamiやその他の大きなフェスに行って、様々な種類の異なったスタイルのダンスミュージックを聞くだけでもインスパイアされるよね。だから、今の音楽の方向性って最高だと思う。僕らはその真ん中にいて、誰も2年後どんな音楽方向性になっているか知らないけれど、僕が思うには、とてもエキサイトできるものだと思うな。
＿＿音楽をプロデュースしたり、ダンスフロアを盛り上げる以外に何かこだわっていることはありますか？
Thomas Gold：僕のスケジュールはとても忙しいから、あまり他のことをする時間がないんだけれど、時間が少しでもある時は、僕の故郷ベルリンで友達とよく夕食を一緒に食べたり、楽しい時間を彼らと過ごしているよ。特にこの季節、夏の時期になってくると、ベルリンでは沢山の素敵なアウトドアで楽しめる場所があるんだ。友達とは、家で夕食を自ら作ったりもしてるんだ。だから、友達と家族で一緒に時間を過ごすっていうことをフリーな時間を見つけては作るようにしているんだ。
＿＿何故アルバムのタイトルを“Revelation”にしたのですか？ また、このアルバムを通してどんなことをThomas Goldとして明らかにしたいですか？
Thomas Gold：僕は自分の新しい面をこのアルバムを通して、さらけ出してみたかったんだ。別に自分のもっと良い面とかではなく、何か今までとは違う面の自分って言う意味でね。
僕の頭の中にある今までとは違う音楽に関するアイディアが、このアルバムで現れているんだ。ただプログレッシヴ・ハウスやクラブ用の曲をプロデュースするということ以外にも、僕にはThomas Goldとして沢山のことができるっていうことを、自分の他の新しい面として人々に見て欲しいんだ。
昔ポップやクラシック、それにジャズをプレイしてたんだけど、皆その僕の面については知らないから、そういう面も皆に知って欲しいんだ。小さな頃キーボードを習っていた頃からずっと様々な種類の音楽を作ることが大好きだったという、ただ僕は音楽を愛している! という面を見て欲しいんだ。
＿＿何故ダンスミュージックをやり始め、それをキャリアとしたのですか？
Thomas Gold：僕が音楽をプロデュースし始めた頃は、シカゴ・ハウスのようなオールドスクールなハウスミュージックだったんだけど、段々エレクトロ・ハウス、その後はプログレッシヴ・ハウスが大きくなって、Swedish House Mafiaみたいなアーティストにすごく影響されたんだ。この時代のアーティストたちと沢山の時間を一緒に過ごしたから、僕がこのキャリアを始めたばかりの頃は彼らから沢山のインスピレーションを受けたよ。今となっては皆全てEDMって言うけど、僕は自分のことを100％EDMに所属しているとは思ってないんだ。
だからね、僕の新しい音楽ではEDMな感じをプログレッシヴなサウンドに残しておくけれど、何か違う感う要素も取り入れたいんだ。なんせ、128bpmでずっとやり続けてきているし、同じことをリピートしたくないと思ったんだ。こうやって違う面の自分（EDMだけにこだわらない自分）を出すか出さないかと決めることに少し時間がかかったんだ。何故ならば、人々がどんな風にそれに対して反応するか分からなかったからね。
でも、スタジオで自分が好きなことをして気持ち良い気分になりたかったんだ。今となっては、自分のやりたいことを貫くことができ、人々からのそれに対しての反応もポジティブだし僕はハッピーだよ。
＿＿最近数々のアーティストたちがEDMとポップを混ぜることが多くなってきましたが、それについて何か思うことはありますか？
Thomas Gold：The Chainsmokers、Major LazorやJack Uを始めとして、ダンスミュージックのフィールドにいるアーティストたちは皆、伝統的なEDMの殻を破ってまでも彼ら独自の音楽を追求し始めていると思うんだ。
＿＿このアルバムの新しいジャンルは何ですか？
Thomas Gold：僕自身もどんな種類のジャンルと呼んでいいのか分からないんだ。エレクトロニック・ミュージックとポップの影響が大きいんだけど、分からないな。逆に教えて！ まあダンス、ポップ、そしてエレクトロニックって感じだと思うよ。
＿＿何故アルバムを2つのパートに分けてそれぞれ別の時期にリリースすることにしたのですか？
Thomas Gold：何故ならば、全部の曲を同時に一つのアルバムに入れたくなかったんだ。もし全曲を同時に入れてしまうと、人々はただ曲をストリーミングして、2週間後には曲のことを忘れちゃうし、皆がどんな反応するか分からないんだよね。だから、少し間を空けて、曲を分けてリリースしたかったんだ。それに僕自身、少し時間が欲しかったんだ。時間があれば、まだリリースされていない曲を変えたりできるからね。
＿＿パート2はいつ頃リリースされますか？
Thomas Gold：出来る限り早く今年中にでも！
＿＿最近、DJやプロデューサーの間ではオルター・エゴのペルソナを使用することがポピュラーになっていますが、あなたは、このオルター・エゴで曲を作ろうと考えたことはありますか？
Thomas Gold：オルター・エゴで音楽を作ろうと考えたことはあるよ。他のジャンルで音楽を作るっていうアイディアはあるんだ。例えば、いつかテックハウスのシーンに少しの間戻って曲を作りたいんだ。僕が8年か9年前にToolRoomレコードから曲を出していた時代のね。だから将来的にオルター・エゴで曲を出すかもしれないな。
でも今は、この新しいアルバムに集中したいんだ。確かにいつか他の名前を使って登場するアイディアはあるんだけど、今の時点でファンたちはどんなジャンルにもオープンだし、Thomas Goldとしてテックハウスの曲をだしてもいいんじゃないか？って思うんだよね。どんなジャンルであっても僕は僕で変わりないし、誰も文句は言わないと思うよ。
＿＿マイアミでプレイすること、Miami Music Week中にプレイすることで好きなことは何ですか？
Thomas Gold：ここ、サウスビーチのバイブが大好きなんだ。って言うのは、ビーチを見れば分かるでしょ。ここには何でもあるしね。食べ物も美味しいし、ここでは、他のいつも会えないDJ達にもバッタリ会えたりするんだ。皆、トラベルしていて忙しいけど、ここでなら集まれるんだよね。もう今年でここにこの時期に来るのは、たしか10年目なんだ。
＿＿あなたは2016年に日本にいらっしゃいましたが、日本のどんな所が好きですか？ また、日本でどんなことをしましたか？
Thomas Gold：まずは、日本の食べ物が大好き！ 寿司と刺身が大好きなんだ。だからこれらを日本で食べるという体験ができて最高だったよ。あとね、フグも試すこともできて素晴らしかったよ。幾つかのローカルな場所にも行くことができたんだ。人々はナイスで、皆優しく出迎えてくれて、集まってくれた人はクレイジーだったよ。本当にクレイジー！ 良い意味でね。
＿＿日本で近いうちにプレイする予定はありますか？
Thomas Gold：アメリカにこれから4週間滞在して、その後はヨーロッパでプレイするから、まだ分からないんだ。でも、チャンスがあれば勿論日本でまたプレイしたいよ。
＿＿何か日本のあなたのファンへのメッセージはありますか？
Thomas Gold：サポートしてくれてありがとう。日本は最高だよ。いつも僕が来日する時、暖かいお迎えをしてくれてありがとう！ 次に日本に行くことが待ち遠しいよ！

Already a well-known name on the Dance Music scene, veteran Thomas Gold shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the musician has decided to take a new direction with his music – showcasing another, broader, side of himself. Filled with more vocals and a “pop” feel with slower beats, his new album on Armada Music, ‘Revelation: Part 1,’ is the shining example that many DJs are indeed talented musicians with amazing production skills. It appears that this risky move by the Berlin based artist is really paying off. Part 1 of the ‘Revelation’ album dropped April 1 and its lead single ‘Magic’ has already reached over 20 million plays on Spotify. Other songs on the album include ‘Survive,’ an upbeat and infectious summer anthem featuring Ida Hallquist on vocals, and ‘Sanctuary’ that has the listener hypnotized and soul searching. Part 2 of the album is expected later this year. Kicking off a U.S. tour during Miami’s Music Week, we sat down to speak with Thomas about his new musical direction, his love for music, and his love for the food in Japan!

___Your new album, “Revelation: Part 1” is being released on Armada – a label that describes itself as driven by passion. It seems that this new album is very much a passion project for you. What is it that drives your passion for dance music and for this album especially?
I’m just a music lover. I grew up making music. When I was 7 I started playing they keyboard because I was in love with music. I just wanted to make music. It’s still my passion – I’m so happy when I get up in the morning because I can walk into the studio and create something and make music. I enjoy myself and can spend hours in there. I’m really grateful that I have the privilege to turn my hobby and my passion into my job.
Regarding “Revelation” – all my love for music is shown in this album. I tell the whole story. I went away from club music so the album is more of a song based album. I work with a lot of vocalists on the album and I spent a lot of time working in the studio with songwriters and singers. I wanted to go a new direction and an album is the perfect place where you can show people what you can do, what you want to do, and you can just be free to express yourself. You are not limited to having to make a club track or a big hit so I put all the ideas that I have had in my head for a while into the album.
I am also getting very slow with this album. Some tracks are even 96bpm or 95bpm. My single “Magic,” for example, is 105bpm. The album is very different than anything else I have done before and it’s very exciting because I can use different instruments and I don’t have to think about ‘Can I use this track in the club? Does it have the right drop? Is the energy right?’ It’s more about – ‘Does the song work? Can I get the vibe right?’ I have taken a completely different approach with the album and I am really happy about that.
___You seem like an artist purely driven by passion – with dance music so huge right now and so many “DJs” trying to make a name, how do you feel about the direction of dance music?
At the moment, you can’t really tell where it’s going because everybody I speak to is trying to do something new and something different which is actually a cool thing because, first of all, people are open to anything. For example, the feedback I got for my new album – there was no one saying negative things about it. Even the old-school fans are telling me that they love what I am doing. This is great because you can never be sure what fans are going to like so it is always a risk to try something new and different.
You see that so many DJs and producers are trying to do new things and everyone is doing it their own way. Everyone has a different vision and there are so many influences coming from everywhere now. For example, even myself – I started listening to Trap and Dub Step, which I never did before. Even though I don’t product this type of music, it still inspires me. I also listen to a lot of pop-music which inspires me too. Even just going to Ultra Miami or other big festivals, you can hear so many different styles of dance music to get inspired. So, it is a great movement right now. We are in the middle of it, so nobody knows what is going to happen 2 years from now, but I think it willc be exciting to see.
___Besides producing music and killing the dance floors, what else are you passionate about?
There is not much time left in my schedule, but whenever I can, I like to hang out with friends. Home in Berlin, we eat dinners with friends a lot. We make home dinners or just hang out together. Especially with summer coming now, Berlin has so many outdoor places that are lovely. So, socializing with my friends and family is what I try to do whenever I have the time.
___The title of your album – “Revelation” – why did you choose this title, or better yet, what is it that you want to be revealed about Thomas Gold through this album?
It’s all about revealing a new side of myself; not necessarily a better version of myself, but just a different version of myself. Its shows what other music ideas I have in my head – to show that I can do way more things than just progressive house or club tracks. I want to reveal that side of myself and show people the other side of Thomas Gold. It’s a part of me that I have always had ever since I was a little kid learning to play the keyboard. I used to play pop music and even classical and Jazz music, but nobody knows about this side of me so I want to show people that I love creating other types of music as well. I’m just a music guy!
___Why did you start with dance music then with your career?
Well, when I started producing music, I came from the old-school house music days (like Chicago house). Then electro-house got bigger and then progressive house, and of course I got a lot of influence from guys like Swedish House Mafia. I spent a lot of time with artists from this era, so of course I got a lot of inspiration from them for my music in the early part of my career. Now, everything is about EDM, but I don’t consider myself a 100% EDM guy. So with my new music I still keep the progressive sound with a little bit of EDM flavor, but I just didn’t want to repeat myself – like after all these years working at 128bpm – so I wanted to do something different. It took a while to decide to show this side of me, because I never knew how people would react to it, but I wanted to feel good in the studio and just do my thing and now I am happy that I have gotten so many positive reactions to it.
___A lot of artists are becoming more hybrid between EDM and pop these days, what are your thoughts on that?
The Chainsmokers, Major Lazor, Jack U – they opened the door and now everyone in dance music is trying to find their own way with their music, even outside of traditional EDM.
___What would be the new genre for your album then?
I don’t even know what type of genre you would call it. It has a lot of influence from electronic music and pop, but I don’t know, you tell me! I guess dance/pop/electronic.
___Why did you choose to release the album in two parts?
Because I did not want to put out everything at the same time. If you do this, you don’t know how people will react because people stream a track and then forget about it two weeks later. I wanted to release my new music piece by piece and stretch things out a little bit. Also, I wanted to give myself a little more time so I can still make changes to unreleased tracks if I want to.
___When can we expect part 2 to be released?
As soon as possible this year!
___It seems like “alter-ego” personas are becoming even more popular these days with DJs and producers these days. Have you ever thought about making music from an alter ego persona?
I have thought about it. Maybe in the future because I still have other ideas in my head for making music in other genres. For example, I eventually want to move back for a little while to the tech house scene which I did 8-9 years ago when I was releasing tracks on ToolRoom Records. But for now I really want to focus on my current album. There is the idea of eventually using another name, but now since fans are so open to anything, if I want to just release a tech house track as Thomas Gold sometime, why not? Nobody would complain about it because it’s still me.
___What do you love most about playing in Miami and playing at Ultra?
I love the vibe here. South beach. I mean – just look at the beach. You have everything here. The food is amazing, you run into so many people from the industry who you don’t usually get to see during the rest of the year because everyone is traveling. It’s like a homecoming every year. I think it’s like my 10th year.
___You were in Japan back in 2016 – what did you like about Japan? What sorts of things did you get to do there?
First of all, I love the food! I love sushi and sashimi. To have the experience of eating it in Japan was great. Also, trying blowfish and stuff was amazing. I got to go to some great local places. People are really nice there. The welcome was so warm and the crowds are crazy – really crazy!
___Will you be playing any shows in Japan anytime soon?
I don’t know yet because I am going to the United States for 4 weeks and then Europe. But who knows, I would love to if I get the chance.
___What message do you have for your Japanese fans?
Thanks for all the support. Your country is amazing. Thanks for the warm welcome every time I go there! I can’t wait to be back!
