Interview with Laidback Luke

Laidback Luke:

Interview with Laidback Luke

___Congratulations so much on winning so many awards for Kung Fu in Hong Kong recently! What are the parallels you feel exist between the work you put in to the martial arts and the work you put in to producing your music?

Laidback Luke: With everything, with a lot of practice, comes results. What a lot of people don’t realize is that when you start to practice something, it always feels hard until you reach the point where you have actually mastered it and then it’s not that hard anymore. In the martial arts, we say it takes about 10 years to become a master. It’s the same with producing as well. Ten thousand hours to master a skill – that’s what they say, right? So, it’s the same with producing as well.

A funny thing is that I taught a Kung Fu class while in Miami for Music Week to a crowd of 50 people and as I was putting them through all these Kung Fu tests, I was monitoring their energy levels and seeing if they were staying focused; and if not I changed the exercises or I toned it down or gave them a challenge. So it actually felt like I was handling the crowd similar to how I would at a show. At a show, I always monitor the crowd. If they need more energy, I’ll give them more energy. If they need to have some vocals, I’ll give them some vocals and that’s a another funny parallel as well.

___You commented previously that many of the songs on your most recent album took only hours to produce (very quickly). Abraham Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address on the way to the speech. Where do you get your inspiration to make such amazing music so seamlessly?

Laidback Luke: Amazing! I love it! I have a very simple trick and I have said it on my vlogs once as well – super, super simple and this is amazing for anyone who feels like they have a writer’s block or anything – just handle your track as a concept. For instance, I am just sitting here talking to you, and off the top of my mind, I could tell you I want a new song to sound like M83 meets DJ Chuckie. Instantly, you’ll have an image in your head of what the track might sound like. So, your brain all of the sudden by having this little concept starts rattling creatively. All of the tracks on my album I just wrote down in two sentences (before I started producing). For instance, one track was my Benny Bennasi ‘Cinema’ Remix meets Hardwell ‘Spaceman.’ I made three tracks that sounded like this concept and then I picked the best one out for my album and that’s it. So you’ll always be creative this way.

___Do you wait for inspiration to come to you before you start working?

Laidback Luke: There needs to be room for creativity. Creativity cannot be forced so another big tip of mine is, for instance, if you produce, it’s always important that after every 2 hours, you take a half hour break. It doesn’t matter where (when) you are in the track. You will always see that in that half hour you are away – eating, walking, watching something – the best ideas come up. Then when you get back to your track, your ears are refreshed and you can instantly hear what you still need to do. Those little breaks give the space for creativity.

___You are hugely popular in Japan – what message do you have for your Japanese fans?

Laidback Luke: First of all, it’s incredible to hear! I am super honored that they like my stuff. I love coming to Japan and I think the Japanese people are amazing!

___You have played in Japan many times before. What do you love most about Japan? What are some things you like to do when you play there?

Laidback Luke: The best thing is – and I actually dedicated a whole vlog to the EDM scene of Japan – that the people are so dedicated. For example, if I put a song out and then I play it in Japan a week after, they will already know it and sing along to it. And when DJ’s go over to Japan, the fans are fully dressed in merchandise and logos, so it’s just such a dedicated crowd and you don’t see that anywhere else in the world.

___You have been in the game a long time – how do you feel about the current direction of dance music?

Laidback Luke: Well, It’s a tricky question nowadays. I love the Chainsmokers, I absolutely do – they are such nice guys. But the way it’s going now, it’s going really pop and it has nothing to really do with the house music feel. It’s probably just me getting old and I’ll move along with it, and electronic dance music is electronic dance music, but I kind of miss the 128bpm and underground stuff. We will see where it goes. I think, overall, it’s a very big and healthy scene – tons of stuff to do and listen to so it’s great!
